An article by a PhD student in Physics Ícaro Rodrigues Lavor, under the guidance of Prof. Andrey Chaves, from the UFC Physics Department, was featured on the cover of the Journal of Physics: Condensed Matter (April 10 edition), an important magazine in the area of Condensed Matter Physics.
The article entitled “Magnetic field induced vortices in graphene quantum dots”, studies the appearance, formation and pattern of vortices in the electronic current when a graphene monolayer is subjected to an external magnetic field.
Student Ícaro Rodrigues, who is also a Professor at the Federal Institute of Maranhão and is doing a joint doctorate at the University of Antwerp, Belgium, explains that these vortexes are like swirls formed by the movement of electrons, which reorganize themselves in the graphene sheet as the intensity of a magnetic field applied to the system increases. He also adds: “the figure on the cover illustrates a square graphene sheet: we show that, as with the current of electron pairs in the superconductors, the pattern of organization of the current vortexes in graphene follows the symmetry of the sheet, ie , if the graphene sheet is square, the vortexes will be organized in such a way as to follow the square symmetry ”. Finally, he adds: “I am very happy and grateful to all the teachers that I have had since I started my graduation in Physics at UFC, in 2010, mainly to Prof. Andrey Chaves, who has been my advisor since scientific initiation. I am also very grateful to IFMA, an institution that I have been a part of since 2017. I am sure that, when I finish my doctorate, I will return with an aggrandizing knowledge, thus being able to contribute more effectively to the scientific development of the institution.
The article also had the collaboration of Professors Diego Rabelo (UFC), Gil Aquino (UFC) and Prof. Francois Peeters, University of Antwerp (UA), Belgium. Leader of the Condensed Matter Theory group (CMT / UA) of the said University, where the student is doing a PhD in joint tutelage (Joint PhD), Prof. Francois Peeters maintains constant collaboration with the Condensed Matter Theory Group (GTMC / UFC), of which UFC professors are part.
It is not new that the Federal University of Ceará is highlighted in research related to graphene. In 2013, UFC was the second University in the country with the most publications on the topic of graphene .
